Strategies for Coping with Stress

One of the things that we learn through stress management is that time and stress are always closely related. We are always juggling so many things at once whether it is our careers, family, relationships and financial responsibilities. One of the most important things that we need to do to help reduce stress is to start surrounding ourselves with positive influences and try to recognize/reduce situations and avoid people that are unsupportive.  We need to examine our environment and see what areas we need to change for our physical and emotional health.

Here are a few ways that can help you to reduce the stress in your life:

  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Meditation
  • Exercise – Gym, walking, outdoor activities
  • Deep breathing techniques
  • Writing in a journal
  • Massage/Reiki
  • Positive Communication

One of the most important things that will help you reduce stress is to start doing things that you love.  Make a list of the things that you enjoy, love and that make you smile.  You may start to realize that the things that you love might not cost as much as you think.  For example instead of registering for a gym membership you can start walking around the neighbourhood, hiking or biking on a nature trail or city paths.  There are even websites that will list fun inexpensive activities for singles or families. One of my favourite quotes is by an author named Dr Wayne Dyer: “When you change the way you look at things; the things you look at begin to change.

The stresses that you are facing right now in your life; what can you do right now to make some changes.  It all starts with a positive attitude and fresh outlook on life.

It all begins with you – are you ready to make that change?

An Amazing Website for Teaching at Home

I have two daughters who both attended a Montessori preschool and have seen the amazing benefits it had for them prior to attending elementary school. I am now at home with my son and have looked around for awhile for teaching tools for Montessori. I just found this amazing site (www.montessoriprintshop.com) and my son already loves the activities that we are doing. He loves learning and science is his favourite subject. Discovering Your Life’s Purpose

There is a purpose for your life, whether you believe it or not. You may have to take several paths, but with a little soul searching, you can find where you’re meant to be.  A life that truely makes you happy!

The first step to figuring out your purpose in life is to consider what natural talents, gifts and abilities you’re born with. Discover the gifts you have and turn your life into a rewarding journey.

· Are you artistic or musical?
· Is it easy for you to talk to people?
· Are you a natural communicator?
· Do you love to socialize?
· Do you love to decorate and rearrange your home?
· Are you good at taking charge?
· Are you creative and crafty?
· Are you a good writer?
· Do you have good organizational skills?

Once you figure out what talents and natural gifts you possess, you can then look at the numerous opportunities that exist out there for you. This is your purpose in life.

What Do You Love to Do?

Have you really reflected on what you love to do? You can be one of those people that love your job and look forward to going to work everyday?

There are literally millions of possibilities, so start with the gifts and talents you were born with. From there figure out what you love to do that requires using those gifts and talents.

· If you’re artistic or musical, teaching others how to draw, paint or play an instrument may be your calling in life.

· Being naturally social, you might consider being an organizer for social events. What about marketing and sales.

· If you’re always redecorating and rearranging your home, why not get paid to do it and start an interior decorating business? What about a career in Real Estate?

· Being a natural born leader opens all kinds of doors that could lead you in many different directions. Does your church or other local community groups need someone to head up a department? You may find your purpose there.

· The love of writing may be something you don’t even realize yet. With blogging becoming the most popular way to market a business.  Start by writing on topics you already have knowledge about and go from there.

Finding your purpose in life simply takes self-reflection as well as some trial and error. Free yourself from wandering through life without purpose. We’re all here for a reason and, once your find your purpose and begin living it, you’ll feel happy and fulfilled!

Apple of My Eye

How “Apple of My Eye” came to be. My family are my life. I cherish all the memories with my children. The precious moments in child’s life inspired this book. As parents, we teach our children so that one day, they will turn into confident adults. The milestones children have in some ways define how they will become. There are many “firsts” in a child’s life, such as a dance recital, first day of school and riding a bike without training wheels.

Sometimes we take for granted how important these milestones are to children. I wanted to capture these moments that are special to my children. In turn, I can connect with my childhood and can appreciate how my parents felt about me. I hoped that I’ve captured the essence of the bond parents have with their children. Enjoy this book and appreciate all that your child has to offer. To learn more about Apple of My Eye Book please visit: www.jocelinele.com

Our Story…… with CHEO

When we decided to publish a book, we always had a goal to give back to our community. What is better than giving to a children’s hospital such as CHEO that provides so much care for our children. My children have personally benefitted from the caring staff at CHEO. November 2009 was my first real experience with CHEO.
My daughter received such great care from all levels of staffing, beginning with the volunteers to the nurses and doctors. My oldest daughter appeared to be healthy to us. She had a great weekend with her sister and cousin, enjoying their first slumber party. The next day, she was complaining about her throat. We thought she was tired from the late night and the excitement. She also suffers from allergy induced asthma, which causes her to also get congested.

We were not concerned as she had no fever, or loss of appetite. She was eating healthy and even ate tortellini the night before we went to CHEO. Things changed the following morning when she slept in, and when she woke up we were unable to understand her. We now know it is called a “hot potato”, voice. I asked her to stick out her tongue so that I can take a look, but it did look swollen. I took her to a clinic and had her assessed. The answer was “no” to all of the routine questions asked by the doctor. Does she have a fever, is she eating, is she complaining of pain, does she have any other symptoms.

After the doctor examined her throat, she told me I had to get to CHEO immediately. The concern was that her throat was very swollen which might affect her breathing. I took a look with her doctor, and saw that her left tonsil was pushed all the way over to the right. I was so shocked, I had no idea it was this severe. Once assessed at CHEO they determined that she would need surgery. I was told that in 15 years of practice, the doctors had never seen a case like my daughter. During their assessment, they were concerned that it might be cancer and they would know after they went to the operating room.

We tried to remain as positive as we could during this time. During surgery, doctors found an abcess behind her tonsil. They performed a tonsillectomy. Testing was done on the tonsils to rule out cancer, something a parent never wants to hear about with their child. What truly helped my husband and I through this experience was the caring staff at CHEO. We are very grateful to the staff , child life services for providing such professional care to our daughter.
After spending almost a week there, and spending time with the staff, I’ve come to realize that CHEO is a home away from home for some families. Our stay as a family was brief at CHEO, but they have inspired me by their professionalism and care for all families that walk through their doors. We are only as strong as our community. CHEO provides great care for our children. In turn, the community embraces CHEO as part of an extended family.

Please follow my journey, our business and our books. Every aspect of threelights healing is focused on supporting families within the community. To learn more about the book we published please visit: www.jocelinele.com

A New Year for making dreams happen.

In 2009, this was my year to put my dreams into action. Instead of wondering what it would be like to own my own business, and publish a book; I put my dreams into action. Let go of my fears and just believe in myself. The year ended with my first children’s book being published. It was exciting to see my book completed. The reviews were better than I could have ever imagined. In 2010 will be year of seeing all of my accomplishments unfold. Now in 2011, will be an amazing year as I smile everyday while living my dreams to the fullest even 2 years later. “Dreams really do come true.” has a whole new meaning. If you are determined to succeed, you will rise above any obstacles that come your way. When you focus on your strengths instead of your weaknesses, you will achieve greater success. We need to be able to work through our fears and self doubts about what it is we want to achieve. The only regret in life is not going after your dreams. Always wondering what could have been. Instead you could be living that dream, your dream. Make 2011 your year to make your dreams come true. I wish you all the best and happiness throughout the year.

How to Live Without Regret

It’s hard to keep regret out of your life. No matter where you find yourself today, there’s a chance that you’ll have certain things you wish you did differently. When you strive to look at your situation with a different perspective, you’ll gain a better understanding about life and you’ll learn to live without regret.

While you won’t be able to completely eliminate regret in your life, you can take steps to reduce it. Strive to keep your life organized and live your life your way.

1. Establish Your Priorities. One way to begin living without regret is to sort out your priorities. Are you happy with where you are and where you’re going? If you’re living your life according to plan and you’re happy, then you have nothing to regret. If changes need to be made, taking small steps may be of help to you.

2. Live By the Golden Rule. Everyone can benefit by living his or her life with the golden rule in mind. Simply stated, the golden rule is: “Treat people the way you’d like to be treated.” If you do this, you’ll definitely keep your regrets to a minimum.

3. Take Swift Action. The next step is to take swift action in your life. You only have one life and the time is now. If your goals are clear and you know what you want, what are you waiting for? A common regret is not doing the things that are truly important to them.

4. Spend Time with Loved Ones. Spend all the time you can with your loved ones. If they live far away, visit when you can and call often. Make time for your immediate family by scheduling dinners together or family nights out.

5. Forget Regret. Ultimately, it always comes down to the fact that you can’t change the past no matter how hard you try, nor how often you think about it. All you can do is take action now to change what happens in the future.

Regret clouds our current thinking and stands in the way of a happy future. But you have the power to blast through regret and move forward with your life! This is what I have learnt from watching my grandmother live her life. She had a favorite song by Frank Sinatra “I Did It My Way.” She lived, loved, laughed for her family and for herself. She lived a life that made her happy, lived in the moment and had no regrets. Give it a try and see what changes happen in your life.

7 Ways to Reduce Stress in Your Home

Does this picture describe your happy home? The baby’s crying while you are rushing to put the dinner on the table, the dog just made a mess on the floor, the hubby’s got the TV on full-blast, and your teenager just angrily slammed the door on his way out.

Unfortunately, it’s a typical scene for many of us. However, the good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. There are, in fact, things you can do to ease this stress and create a more harmonious environment so that you and your family can look forward to coming home!

Although some degree of stress is inherent as you deal with the varying phases of your family members, if you strive to uphold a core set of values and go with the flow, you can maintain a happy and healthy home.

Here are some specific ways you can reduce the stress at home:

1. Get organized. Life can quickly become chaotic when you don’t maintain organization. An organized home runs smoothly, while an unorganized home leads to stress and lost time.

2. Communicate. Your family will certainly benefit from actively working on communication skills. When you fail to communicate effectively, you may not get what you want and can even cause upsetting misunderstandings. Working on communication will allow all family members to feel loved and appreciated and help the household run efficiently.

3. Eat dinner together. Everyone in your family likely has a busy life of their own. It’s easy to suddenly realize that you have no idea what’s going on with your spouse or child. When you make it a point to eat dinner together every night, you make time to connect with your family. You’ll learn how to work as one even with busy lifestyles.

4. Have fun together. It’s important to schedule time to have fun together as a family, even if these times can’t be as often as you’d like. Schedule family nights in advance and allow each family member a chance to pick that evening’s activity.

5. Show unconditional love. Be sure to practice the art of unconditional love with your family. This leads to secure attachments and will ultimately keep everyone in your family happy and stress-free.

Children and parents alike need to know that, when they make mistakes, they have a loving family that will back them up and forgive them.

6. Give support. Go out of your way for your family members. It might not be an ideal Friday night to go to your daughter’s art show, but just think of how they’ll feel when they see that they have your love and support. Actively express your support by really being there for your family – no matter what. Just thinking about how much you love them is not enough!

7. Family rules. Having a set of family rules will help with organization and allow everyone to know what’s expected of them.

A happy and stress free home is one built on love. Don’t be too hard on yourself and others and you’ll have the basis for creating an excellent home life.

How to Set Clear Goals

Without goals, there would be no passion, purpose, or drive in life. If your goals are too vague, you’ll find much more difficulty on your journey than if you’d properly prepared.

Planning Your Goals

The planning phase is the most important stage when it comes to achieving your goals.Planning might come easy or hard for you, but one thing’s for sure, without planning the end goal may not even exist at all.

While it’s important to setup your own system that works for you, there are some simple goal setting strategies you can use to make your planning easier.

Consider the following tips for finding clarity in your goals.

1. Decide what you want. Don’t be afraid to take the time to figure out what you want.
2. Be Specific. Be very details as you develop every part of your goal.
3. Writ it down. Write down your ideas and decisions.
4. Break down your goal into increments. If you have a lofty goal, it’ll become manageable if you break it down into smaller pieces.
5. Repeat the process. Once you’ve found a good system, it’s time to repeat the process. Clarify your other goals that you’d like to achieve.
